The organizers of the Journée sans culture have drafted a pointed submission to the recent consultations on the renewal of Quebec’s cultural policy. The 17-page document calls for cultural policies that are set by and responsive to the needs of artists and arts workers. The JSC is an independent, volunteer-run organization that operates at a distance from established institutional frameworks. This submission draws on the many discussions that took place during the first Journée sans culture on October 21, 2015 – a day when more than 300 people from all artistic disciplines gathered at Théâtre Aux Écuries in Montreal as part of a symbolic strike. As such, it constitutes a valuable resource that gives voice to the wishes and expectations of arts workers, as well as illuminating the important tensions that they deal with day to day.
This document anticipates the appearance of an edited volume, scheduled for release this October. The publication brings together a number of texts that revisit the reflections and discussions that were sparked at last year’s event. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for an invitation to the launch!
